Tareen urges to set wheat supply proposals


ISLAMABAD: Advisor to Prime Minister on Finance, Shaukat Tareen here on Tuesday advised the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MinFAL) to devise a set of wheat distribution proposals to ensure proper supply to all the provinces.Chairing the meeting of Economy Monitoring Committee (EMC) Shaukat Tareen said that the proposals should be devised in a way that no province faces wheat shortage in future.He said that necessary approval would be taken from the government after firming up all possible options on the issue to ensure judicious distribution of the commodity.The adviser directed MinFAL to recast its existing policy implementation framework on supplementing its existing stock position in a manner that people face no inconvenience.Earlier, the MinFAL briefed EMC on existing wheat stock position in the country, saying that 1.75 tons of wheat have been imported so far which is being transported up country to facilitate convenient availability in the open market.MinFAL informed EMC that currently it has a balance stock of 2.978 million tons.It also informed the EMC that it has 0.95 million tons of DAP in stocks that could adequately address nationwide farmers’ demands. It further briefed EMC about domestic demand of 7,30,000 tones of urea to meet local consumption.Adviser directed MinFAL to put up its urea and DAP specific recommendations on all policy issues within two weeks for EMC /ECC decisions On the occasion, Ministry of Industries briefed EMC about proposal to import raw sugar to meet any anticipated shortfall.
