Friends of Pakistan meeting today


ABU DHABI: An important meeting of Friends of Pakistan will be held today (Monday) at Abu Dhabi to decide the modalities and agenda for the foreign minister level meeting of the group being held later on.Pakistan and the host-country United Arab Emirates (UAE) will jointly presided over the meeting, said ARY OneWorld.Pakistan’s needs, priorities and financial crisis including modalities to avert the economic collapse and possibilities of financial aid are likely to be discussed in the meeting.The meeting will also finalize the agenda for the foreign ministers’ meeting to be held later.Friends of Pakistan group, comprising of Saudi Arabia, UAE, China, France, England, U.S., Canada, Turkey, Australia, Italy, U.N and European Union, was launched on September 26.Meanwhile, Ambassador at Large Javed Malik has said Pakistan needs international support to consolidate democracy.Talking to ARY OneWorld, he said return of democracy is historic opportunity not only for Pakistan but for the entire international community."There is a need to support Pakistan so that it can successfully face economic challenges and achieve social development goals with a particular focus on education, health and human development," said Malik.Issues like Pakistan’ access to markets of Friends of Pakistan and evolving a mechanism through which private sector involvement in Pakistan's development can be encouraged are likely to be discussed in forthcoming meeting, he added.
