Troops kill 33 in Afghanistan


KABUL: Afghan and coalition troops have killed 33 militants in fighting in southern Afghanistan, the US-led coalition said in a statement.The battle took place in the southern province of Helmand, about 150 kilometres (93 miles) west of Kandahar, Afghanistan's main southern city.The soldiers had been on patrol in the volatile Nad Ali district on Friday when they were ambushed, it said in a statement."ANSF (Afghan National Security Forces) and coalition forces returned fire primarily with small-arms fire and limited close-air support, killing 33 militants," it said.Nearly 70,000 mainly Western soldiers are stationed in Afghanistan to help fight an insurgency led Taliban, who were in government between 1996 and 2001.
